Not Before Time 10 Feb 2021 Repairs to the road beside the Toll Bridge collection booth are on the way at last

The B4044 will CLOSE from 15 to 20 March inclusive, between the junction with Eynsham Oxford Road roundabout and Farmoor, for resurfacing / patching at Swinford toll bridge. Alternative routes are shown on the map below.

Cost of the works (to be repaid by the bridge owner) is projected at £45,000.

DATELINE 05/01/2021: OCC legal advisers have today given permission for desperately-needed repairs to go ahead on the toll bridge and the bill to be sent to the owner - County Councillor Charles Mathew reports.

Cllr Mathew has received (and forwarded) over 100 expressions of concern in the last 6 months alone, not least from local cyclists, who are particularly impacted by the holes; and he is happy to acknowledge support from Cllr Yvonne Constance, Cabinet member for the environment.

We shall keep you posted on progress! Photos are very welcome as supporting evidence in the legal case.

DATELINE 05/05/2020: Oxfordshire County Council officers have written to the owner of Swinford Toll Bridge, requesting urgent attention to the road on either side of the collection booth, plus a longer term plan for a more permanent resurfacing proposal.

Though repairs are desperately needed, this is not an OCC responsibility, as the bridge is privately owned.

The final straw seems to have been a note from County Councillor Charles Mathew (on behalf of an Eynsham resident), with an extended commentary along the lines that...

‘This is not the first request... The current situation is longstanding and in my view it is ridiculous to claim improvements to the A40 when the long queues remain at the Tollbridge. I have been [raising this] for some 5 years since the report by Siemens on the smartcarding solution, outlining costs and action needed.’
