At Eynsham Beavers we worked on our Cyclist Activity badge tonight. We looked at reaction times and how they mean a vehicle travelling at speed will travel some way before the driver can swerve or stop.
We hoisted some melons to the Scout HQ roof on ropes and dropped them. Its a 3m drop, equivalent to a 17mph impact.
To the Beavers' disapointment the melons survived...but eggs didn't, unless they had a 'cyclinng helmet' made of bubble wrap.
With a bigger drop we coud have this result (in this videoLinconshire Fire Brigade drop melons from 4m to simulate a 19mph impact)
We also learned how to do an 'M-check' : a quick check that your bike's safe to ride before setting off
