Children's artworks

First of all, a big thank you to all the children who contributed artwork to this issue of Over to You. Please see the Gallery below to see delightful artworks from children aged 20 months to 12.

Children's colouring corner

Here's another picture for children to colour and enjoy: Under the Sea, with thanks to Jessie Whealy of Jessie's Art Shed. Look for the Under the Sea download at the bottom of this page, open / save and print it for children to colour in. Or click on the link. Perhaps older children could copy it, too.

Artworks for charity

Nine-year-old Finn Tysom and his six-year-old brother Leo have been raising money for the NHS Witney Community Hospital by selling their drawings of cartoon characters and book illustrations from the family's front garden on Old Witney Road. So far, they have raised an amazing £120! You can see a selection of their drawings, and the boys themselves, in the Gallery on the bottom left.
Three of their school friends who live in Witney (Charlie Partlett, aged 9, and Elliot Payne, aged 9, and his brother Alexander Payne, aged 6) are doing the same - and the five children hope to present their donations by the end of May. So far, their team total is £250 - but with a month to go, who knows how much more these enterprising and considerate children will be able to donate!

Keeping little ones busy

Lockdown has been going on for some time now, and it may be getting harder to keep children entertained. Here are some new ideas - with thanks to Jackie Taylor of Eynsham Pre-School - to help with the under-5s.

  • Make a den under the table or behind the sofa, and add cushions, teddies, dolls, play figures, etc.
  • Share a story in a different place to normal – in a den, in the garden, in the bath ...
  • Put some warm soapy water into a washing-up bowl to wash dolls, dolls' clothes or a dolls' tea set.
  • Hold a dolls'/toys' tea party, Make invitations, bake small biscuits or cakes - and sit back and enjoy!

For children young and old

Paint outside with water

After having sunshine for the past couple of weeks or so, it seems strange to be back to grey skies and rain! This activity, with thanks to Janet Gaukroger, is best-suited to dry weather - but it doesn't have to be sunny!

As the weather improves, give children a plastic pot of water and a few inexpensive paintbrushes of various sizes - and let them ‘paint’ the patio, fence or anything outside. The brushes get pretty messed up after a while, so don’t give them your best oil brushes!

It would be fun to see some of this temporary art - so do take photos and send them to Sarah Medina!

The Great Bug Hunt

Thanks to Laura Stringer for letting us know about this online challenge for primary-age children. Take your children into a garden or other outdoor space to see what bugs they can find, and report back to rebecca@ase.org.uk. For all the details, go to http://www.schoolscience.co.uk/bughunt. Have fun!

Complete the Bug Puzzle

A simple fill-in-the-gaps and matching puzzle for children: Complete the names of five insects that you can see in your garden or outside, and then match them to the pictures. Look for the Bug Puzzle download above, open/save and print it for children to complete. Or click on the link.

And that's it for this issue of the Over to You magazine children's page! Please keep your ideas coming - we couldn't do this without you!
