Eynsham Art Window Takes a Bow 23 Jul 2023 The EAW has closed, but continues online. Alice Walker has moved her art studio & classes to 66 Mill Street.

The Eynsham Art Window Takes a Bow.

The Eynsham Art Window began in the imagination of Eynsham potter Alison Holmans in March 2020. At the time, we were in lockdown. No shops, no galleries, no Artweeks, no place for artists to show their creations.

Alison spoke to her artist friend, Jane Tomlinson, and explained that 66 Mill Street had a double-fronted shop front that was not being used. “What about using it to show art?” Alison suggested. “Great idea! Build it and they will come!”, said Jane. Months later planning permission was granted, and the first display was hung in November.

From day one, security cameras at the premises revealed huge interest in the window! People on their regular lockdown walks stopped to look. Those social-distancing outside the vets and the Chinese takeaway enjoyed the displays. On social media people commented how uplifting it was to see such variety – paintings, drawings, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, and more!

And Eynsham’s artists lined up to show their work. Word spread. Other Oxfordshire artists asked to show in the window. Soon the window included a monthly ‘guest artist’ from outside Eynsham. For three years, the Eynsham Art Window has thrived and been – quite literally – a shop window for more than 40 artists.

... but all good things have to come to an end . . .

With a change of ownership at the premises, it’s time for the window to take a bow. Alison Holmans, who managed and curated the window for three years, says:

"So many people have left me messages saying how much they looked forward to seeing the changing displays, discovered work they liked, and bought art. It’s been wonderful to meet so many genuinely creative people and I’m in awe of their original output. It’s been a blast!"

But it’s not the end of art at 66 Mill Street! Artist Alice Walker is taking over the premises as a studio and to run art classes.

. . . and keep an eye on the Eynsham Art Window on facebook and on instagram @eynshamartwindow as the Eynsham Art Window online supports the Artists from Eynsham and surrounding villages that are producing art for the Forever Fields (www.foreverfields.co.uk) archive and exhibition. Forever Fields want to showcase the 3,400 acres we will lose. To see how you will be affected by the Botley West Solar Farm go to www.Stopbotleywest.co.uk
