Eynsham's Great Big Green Weekend

Great Big Green Week has become a national annual celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

In 2021 and 2022 Eynsham amazed us with over 60 events involving local community groups, businesses, individuals, families and friends of all ages. Now we have 2026!

2026 - Eynsham - Friday 12th June to Sunday 14th June

The Great Big Green Weekend (GBGW) is about focusing on Climate and Nature, with a slogan Together for Good. For Climate, this year our priority is on food and energy since those are where ordinary people like us can make the biggest difference. The Nature part is exploring what Eynsham residents can do to take action to protect our planet.

Food

We are encouraging you to eat less meat because the production of meat products is arguably the leading cause of climate change when considering the amount of land used to grow crops to feed animals, and this land would be better rewilded, or used for other purposes. It is also healthier to replace meat with a well planned plant-based diet.

There are several activities based on food:

We are inviting you to watch a film by Dr Michael Greger ‘How not to Age’ where he advocates a plant based diet as a way of preventing our likelihood of suffering from illness. The film is brimming with expertise and is evidence based. It will inspire you with practical strategies for living a long, healthy life and enjoying every moment of it. Dr Greger is a Physician and an internationally recognised speaker on nutrition. We will show the film during a Zoom meeting on Saturday 13th June at 7pm, followed by a quiz, a discussion, and the opportunity to join a WhatsApp group to share your ideas.

Many of the cafés/pubs/restaurants in Eynsham are including plant-based food on their menus - watch out for the signs displayed in their windows.

There will be a stall at the Eynsham Surgery’s 50th celebration from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 13th June. You can visit us there to find out more about both GreenTEA and the Peace Oak Association.

Tbc On Sunday 14th June from 12 to 2 there will be a plant-based barbecue at the Cherry Tree Café. Tasty. Delicious.

Energy

In September (19th/20th) GreenTEA is holding an Open Homes event where you will be able to visit homes in Eynsham where there have been some improvements made towards making their homes warmer and cheaper to run while doing good for the environment, eg solar panels, insulation, air source heat pumps, triple glazed windows... You will be able to chat with the homeowners to find out more. Two Energy saving homeowners are giving a taster of the September event by opening their homes for you to visit. That will be on Friday 12th June from 2pm to 4pm, Saturday 13th June from 2pm to 5pm, and Sunday 14th June from 10am to 12pm.

There will be children’s activities on the morning of Saturday 13th June from 10am to 12pm in Eynsham Library. There will be junk modelling on a nature theme. The children will repurpose egg boxes, loo rolls, milk bottle tops, … It sounds like great fun!

Eynsham Repair Café are in action on Saturday 13th June from 2pm to 4pm in the Scout Hall. There will be refreshments available.

NO CAR SUNDAY. We would encourage everyone to leave their car at home on Sunday 14th June.

Nature

There are a few activities which cover Nature, and we are also including a showing at 7pm on Sunday 14th June in the Village Hall of the film ‘People’s Emergency Briefing’ which is an eye-opening 50-minute documentary bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts, with contributions from Chris Packham and Deborah Meaden.

Other activities:

You can join Craft Club activities at the Peace Oak on Friday 12th June from 6.30pm to 9pm - on offer are Making Willow Plant Supports or Creating Natural String. There is a fee for either of these activities. You can book these on https://peace-oak.eventcube.io/ (along with other crafts). You can also join in embroidering for free. We are creating panels to remember the Children who have died in Gaza.

We have created an Edible Eynsham Family Trail which you can follow to discover the Community apple trees planted by GreenTEA over 15 years ago. In the Autumn you can pick and enjoy the apples. The trees include Wastie apples which are native to Eynsham. There will be letters on some of the trees which make up a phrase connected to GBGW. The solution will be available on the GreenTEA website on Monday 15th June. To pick up a trail visit our stall at the Eynsham Surgery celebration, the library or on the GreenTEA website eynsham.org.uk/GreenTEA

On Sunday 14th June, there will be tours of the Children’s Food Forest Garden at the Old Witney Road Play Area at 10am and again at 10.30am. The tours will be led by Milly who is enthusiastic about growing our own food in a sustainable way learning from nature’s design.

In addition there are two Nature Recovery Network events taking place during GBGW which deserve a mention. These are Sunday 7th June – Nature Celebration and Meadow Picnic with propagation of rare floodplain meadow wildflowers as part of the Thames Valley Wildflower Meadow Restoration Project and Weds 10th June – Guided Ancient Wildflower Meadow Walk. For more information please email contact@nature-recovery-network.org

We will finish off GBGW with a Community Celebration of Eynsham at the Peace Oak Orchard from 2pm on Sunday 14th June. You are invited to bring a picnic and drinks with you. During the afternoon there will be musical entertainment and poetry, and an embroidered banner will be presented to the Peace Oak Association
