Peter Pinker comments: ‘I was at the Board School [later to become the Primary School] at the time of the Festival of Britain, and those gates with the motif were paid for by the Pupils at the School at that time, the Headmaster Ted Sharp made an Appeal and us kids took in what ever our Parent could afford, just one or two pence every so often, we children were told that in years to come we could all say we helped pay for them, I believe the Oxford Mail came out and took a photo.’
