A notice has been placed in the red telephone box in The Square to the effect that BT wishes to close it. The reason given is that it is not used sufficiently. This is hardly surprising, given that the equipment has been out of order for some time and BT has done nothing whatever to fix it!
Of even more concern is that a contractor was seen measuring up the box, apparently to estimate the materials needed to fill the hole when it is removed.
There are several quite separate issues here.
-
Firstly, the box is (or should be) a useful facility for those who are without mobile phones, or find the mobile coverage too unreliable to be of use. BT should repair it.
-
Secondly, the box is a longstanding feature of the village centre and there is no need to remove it, even if BT cannot be persuaded to make it work again. There are various community uses it could be put to, as has been the case elsewhere.
-
Thirdly (and most importantly) the box is a Grade II Listed Building (entry #1198715, first listed on 13-Aug-1987), and was registered as such with WODC in 2006. This means that BT is required to get listed building consent from WODC to make any changes to it. There is no planning application currently recorded on the WODC website. As the box is in the Conservation Area, it is likely that Conservation Area consent would be required also.
BT is required in any case to consult with WODC. If you are concerned that the box may be removed by BT without the necessary consent, you can telephone 01993 861420 or make a report via the online form.
