The Night Sky in August! 31 Jul 2025 What to look out for in the night sky from Eynsham

This is not intended to be comprehensive - it is a quick guide to help you find a few things in the night sky without any equipment - just your eyes.

All of these are very bright and easy to find when walking around the village.

The planets

  • Mercury – rises all month in the NE at 5am
  • Venus – Rises at 3am in the NE at the beginning of the month and 4am and the end of the month
  • Mars – not visible
  • Jupiter - Rises at 4am in the NE at the beginning of the month and 2am at the end of the month
  • Saturn - Rises at 11pm in the E and is south at sunrise.

Look out for the Perseids meteor shower which peaks on the 12th where you can see around 100 per hour. Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark and look up and they will be seen spreading out across the sky.

The full Moon is a super Moon and on the 9th. it rises in the South East around 9pm. It will be close to the horizon - giving it an illusion that it is bigger.

Look out for the attached chart to help you find the Summer triangle. At sunset in the East at 10pm

There are is a well placed and bright International Space Station passes (ISS) this month at 7:12 pm.

I have made or found the following charts to help you find: -

  • 5th International space station pass at 7:12pm
  • 10th Jupiter and Venus
  • 12th - Perseids Meteor shower
  • 12th Moon and Saturn
  • 20th – Jupiter, Venus. Moon and Mercury
  • The Summer Triangle
  • The phases of the Moon
