We take so many things around us for granted. Someone else will pick up that bit of litter. Someone else will help organise the Carnival. Someone else will fight the gravel or building developers. Someone else will ring the bells. The temptation is to do one’s own thing and leave the communal effort to others.
On Sundays in Eynsham, one of the largest villages in the UK, there are very often only 3 bell ringers... Sometimes the tower is silent.
You need absolutely no qualifications to ring bells in any way whatsoever, except a willingness to give it a try. Indeed, once you can ring, attendance is still completely voluntary - and you can also walk up any other tower in the land and be welcomed in to ring with them! ...and it won't be someone else answering a village need!
If interested please contact Rupert, 34 Newland Street (house with blue shutters opposite The Newlands): 07715 421450 or 01865 881320... or just turn up on Monday evening (not Bank Holidays) at 7:30pm at St Leonard’s church.
