St Leonard's Church News

Christmas Carol Services in Eynsham 20 Dec 2020 Parallels were drawn between the trying circumstances in which some carols were written and the 'cancellation of Christmas'.

St Leonard’s Church was pleased to be able to welcome Eynsham Baptist Church to its new land (on which it plans to build a new church centre) for their pop-up Nativity on Saturday morning December 19 and Community Carol Service on Sunday December 20 at sunset.

Many parallels were drawn for the 100 people at the Community carol service between the very trying circumstances in which some carols were written and the great disappointment people feel with being unable to meet family and friends for Christmas. In the pop-up Nativity the theme of the readings of the Christmas story where the angels tell Mary, Joseph and the shepherds to ‘Fear Not’ was applied to our current circumstances. One of the closing carols was the Queen’s favourite “In the bleak midwinter”, which closes with the offer to give one’s heart as a gift to Jesus.

In the St Leonard’s Carol Service (available online at stleonards.org.uk) the question was asked “Can we have Christmas at times like this?”  The answer was that the first Christmas was a time just like this when ‘those who walked in darkness have seen a great light”. (The prophet Isaiah 9.2). The great light is the coming of Jesus into the world.
